Long story short, I had originally embarked on becoming a Chartered Accountant. Whilst studying for my HND in Business Studies with a specialism in finance I was also undertaking Software Programming and Systems Analysis modules amongst others. I soon realised not only did I find the IT modules fascinating I was actually pretty good at both, so in the 2nd year I undertook specialisms in both Finance and IT. On qualifying I took up an IT position at Baring Brothers & Co Bank and was soon implementing a number of firsts for the organisation, digital data network, Ethernet network, X25 network, PC, Help Desk, Tech Support Team, CHAPS, SWIFT, amongst others. This was an exciting time at the dawn of IT adoption within the City. Having been looking for the next career move Barings asked if I would consider helping establish the infrastructure for a new business Baring Asset Management to be based at Broadgate. The initial primary task being to install a digital voice system and network which was the responsibility of the Administration department. The new office was in a smart building of the time and being the only IT literate person in the department anything remotely technical came my way CAFM, Security, BMS, Video Conferencing, etc., and so my new career in the workplace and FM industry was born.
